Seasonal Produce Guide – Fruits in Vietnam

After sauces, meat cuts, vegetables, thanks to a demand of a “Long term Hanoi dweller” on Twitter (as he stated himself), seasonal produce guide for fruits is finished in rapid time 😀 I tried to list as many types of fruits as I can think of. There is one fruit I love but I forgot! Papaya (đu đủ), has all-year 🙂

Also, I have not named this series yet. I will call it “Shopping at Vietnamese Markets”, maybe…Please let me know if you have any suggestion, highly appreciated!

Last but not least, top fruits in Vietnam. I found this article on Vietnamplus and thought it might be useful and interesting for readers, so I translated a part of it.

In August 2012, Vietnam Guinness Book of Records and Top Vietnam Book of Records announced top 50 fruits in Vietnam, which acknowledged by Southern Fruit Research Institute (SOFRI) and Geographical Indication and International Trademark Division of National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam.

The North has 19 types of fruits: Apricot (Huong Son, Hanoi), peach (Sapa), Meo apple (Son La), King orange (Ha Giang), King orange (Tuyen Quang), Dong Khe pear (Cao Bang), Chi Lang sugar apple/custard apple, Mau Son peach (Lang Son), lychee (Thanh Ha, Hai Duong), Luc Ngan lychee (Bac Giang), Doan Hung pomelo (Phu Tho), longan (Hung Yen), Bo guava (Thai Binh), lady-finger banana (Ha Nam), Canh orange (Hanoi), Dong Dao pineapple (Ninh Binh), Xa Doai orange (Nghe An), Bu orange & Phuc Trach pomelo (Ha Tinh).

The Central has 8 types of specialties: Thanh Tra pomelo (Hue), tuong mango (Binh Dinh), Khanh Son durian (Khanh Hoa), Ninh Thuan grapes, Binh Thuan dragon fruit, Dak Lak avocado, Da Lat strawberry, Dat Lat persimmon.

The South has 23 types of fruits: Ba Den custard apple (Tay Ninh), Lai Thieu mangosteen (Binh Duong), Bien Hoa pomelo, Long Khanh rambutan (Dong Nai), Vung Tay yellow-flesh longan, Can Gio soursop (Ho Chi Minh City), Ben Luc pineapple (Long An), honey orange (Can Tho).

Beside, Tien Giang province itself has 8 delicious fruits: Ngu Hiep durian, Go Cong cherry, Cho Gao dragon fruit, Hoa Loc mango, Lo Ren star apple, Go Cong watermelon, Mac Bac sapodilla, logan.
Ben Tre province has da xanh pomelo, coconut, Cho Lach mangosteen.
Tra Vinh province has Cau Ke coconut (makapuno), Vietnamese mandarin
Vinh Long province has Nam Roi pomelo, Ri6 durian.

Among top fruits of Vietnam, 10 types of fruits have highest economic value (domestic and international consumption): Hoa Loc mango, yellow-flesh longan, Ri6 durian, da xanh pomelo, Lo Ren star apple, lychee, longan, Dien pomelo, Vietnamese mandarin, Canh orange.
